Shopping and getting a bank account in Shenyang

Hi everyone!

I just would like to share what I did the last few weeks. My friend who lives in the same building showed me around the neighborhood. We visited Walmart and Zhongxing Shenyang Commercial Building.

Walmart is a major U.S. supermarket.

When you are in this area and not sure which store sells products that you need to buy, I would recommend you to try and check out Walmart. Literally, they have everything. There are not many Japanese products, mostly Chinese products and some American/imported products. I could find a few Japanese products though.

They are not Japanese products but why not to share these fun kids toothrushes!

Sanitary products

Mouthwash

Laundry detergent for baby clothes: My friend who has lived in Shenyang for about 6 months said she could only find these detergents for sensitive skin. If we find other products, I will definitely share it here!

Diapers

Coffee

Yummy breads

Dog and cat food

Next, we stopped by Zhongxing, a big shopping mall, but this time we just went to the grocery area.

Their fruits and vegetables are very fresh.

People say fruits in Shenyang are very tasty. This muscat was so good, too!

Sesame mochi. There was a sweet black sesame filling.

My children’s favorite, rice crackers!

This saran wrap has cut lines and looks very easy to use.

I didn’t see Japanese miso paste in the mall but I will let you know if I ever find them! But there was some pasta noodles, tomato sauce for pasta, ramen noodles, and olive oil too. But if you look for particular western products, I would recommend to go to Walmart first. They have everything.

The cashless era in China

China has, with impressive speed, become a cashless society. It would be just better to think that credit cards issued overseas are hard to use in this country. And people here tend to not to have cash. But if you are just visiting here for a short stay trip, I would recommend you to bring cash rather than your credit card.

If you live here for a few years, you definitely needs to open your Chinese bank account. It will take some time to open the bank account as a foreigner in China, so I recommend you to go to the bank with your co-workers who can speak Chinese and have experience of opening a bank account. You will also need to bring specific documentation, such as your passport and a statement or proof of employment. Once your account is set up, you download certain payment apps such as “WeChat” and “Alipay” and need to link your new bank account with the apps. I didn’t have a bank account at that time, so my friend was paying for us and we will pay her back once we successfully open our account.
