Today, I would like to share some sweets that we have tried in China.
It has been 3 months since we moved to Shenyang. We have tried sweets that look interesting little by little.
Please understand that all the sweets that we tried are not traditional Chinese sweets. Some of them are a new style of sweets and also you might see them in Japan as well. ![]()
Look at these long shaped snacks! These are both made from rice. I bought them from an outdoor vendor. The snacks’ texture was crispy and slightly sweet. They were both 5yuan each (about $0.7). We had a lot of bags of rice snacks! ![]()

These are known as Crataegus, commonly called hawthorn, which are coated with sugar. These hawthorns look like mini apples, but they tasted a little sour. I liked them, especially because they had a good balance of sourness and sweetness. ![]()

The sweets in the picture above are called “巴坦木奶糕“. There are dried mangos and almonds in the soft milk candies. The texture was very soft. And the next sweets below are called “奶酪枣“. ![]()

These sweets are dried dates coated with marshmallows. The marshmallows tasted more milk flavored than regular marshmallows. There are also these kinds of sweets with almonds stuffed in dried dates.

This old style popcorn is my family’s favorite! So crispy and slightly sweet. I think this is also good as a souvenir since they are so light. ![]()

There fruits candies are called “冰糖葫芦 (bingtanghulu)”. These are traditional sweets, especially from the northern part of China. I bought this variety of the Bingtanghulu. It was only 8 yuan (about $1). These coated candies were so crunchy, and the fruit inside was very juicy. The one with hawthorns (look like mini apples) is a traditional and famous one.

My daughters also bought the strawberry one by saying “one” in Chinese, “yi ge.”
There are mini size of bingtanghulu, too. The fruits are hawthorns. The filling is sweet bean paste and one had crispy brown sugar on top, looked like creme brulee.![]()

These snacks were dried fruits and vegetables. It tastes slightly salty and sweet at the same time, you can also enjoy the flavor of each dried fruit and vegetable. This is very unique snack. ![]()

There was a Shiitake mushroom, too![]()

There were sweet potato chips. We have the same type of chips in Japan.![]()

It was simple but so good. My kids love these – the bag of sweet potato chips were gone in a few minutes. ![]()

This is a famous ice cream and milk tea shop “蜜雪冰城 (Mixue Bingcheng)” in China. This store is everywhere in China! Their soft cream is 2 yuan (about $0.3).

※My daughter wasn’t ready to eat her ice cream, because she was about to draw in her favorite notebook before her ice cream came. But the ice cream came too soon… hehe.
I’ve read an article that Mixue expanded their business to Tokyo, Japan. But currently they are temporarily closed.![]()
This tea is called 清梅九味酸梅湯 in Chinese. It tasted like plum water.

I tried this drink soon after we moved to Shenyang while we walked around town. The flavor is from “鳥梅” which is from smoked black plum. I’ve heard that this drink is good for summer heat. ![]()
That’s all for today! Please let me know what sweets and beverages I should try while we are in China! ![]()
