It has been super cold in recent days. I have experienced a new record of cold weather, -28 degrees (-18.4 °F) in Shenyang. When I was outside, I noticed that some of my eye lashes were frozen. And I was unable to move my fingers in the cold when I tried to use my phone…

Today, I would like to share a drink that my Chinese teacher recommended for cold weather. It is a hot and thicker drink that is made from lotus root powder.

I ordered 3 different brands of lotus root powder from Taobao, a popular Chinese shopping app.

Use 30g (About 1 oz) of the lotus root powder.

Add about 200ml（6.7 ounces) of hot water (95℃) and stir well. If you add the hot water little by little, it will help prevent lumps. The taste was slightly sweet, which I like.

There were small pieces of cashew nuts, cranberries, raisins, wolfberry, and purple yam in it. If it still looks watery after adding hot water, please try microwaving it for 30 seconds. It will become thicker.

In the picture below, you can see the granulated louts roots powder.

These are individually packed, and I think it might be a good for a small souvenir for your friends to try.

After you add hot water (200ml), it will become like the picture above. And this one has some osmanthus in it, so you can also enjoy the smell of the flower.

It had a lot of whole nuts and dried berries plus osmanthus too. I personally liked this one better than the other two. But really this was like a mix of (1) and (2).

My Chinese teacher said she enjoys this lotus root drink as a quick breakfast when she is busy. And the thickness keeps the body warm up. I was thinking that the thickness of the lotus root can be used in making traditional Japanese sweets. But maybe it has been already used and I just don’t know…?

I also tried tea that is said to be good for health and skin. I will write about it in a future blog post.
