Memories of Warm Potatoes at Yunnan’s Red Land

Last October, we went to Yunnan province for a family trip. It was about 4.5 hours by plane from Shenyang. There are 55 minorities in China but 25 of them are still living in Yunnan province.

This is my previous post about the Largest Flower Market and Mushroom Hotpot in Yunnan Province. If you are interested in, please visi the link. 🙂

I would like to write a blog post about Yunnan’s Red Land. It took us about 3 hours by car from downtown Kunming to the moutain. Look at the red colored mountains!

We booked a tour via Tripadvisor.

The mountain soil contains a lot of minerals, expecially iron. And the iron gives the soil its red color.

When we arrived at the moutain, we saw a local person who looked like a legendary wizard with his goat. We asked for a picture, he said 10rmb (about $1.30) and we paid via QR code, WeChat Pay with my smartphone. I thought we could only take one picture but he said we can take as many as we want. Hehe, thank you for your generosity!

My daughter said “I can touch the sky!” with her excitement!

This mountain grows a lot of corn as well.

We found some flowers that fell off on the ground. We took pictures with them!

It was a little bit chilly on top of the mountain.

On the mountain, we saw a lot of street vendors selling local potatoes, corn, and boiled eggs. It was almost lunch time, so we bought some cooked vegetables from the vendors.

We ate two big corn cobs!

And warm potatoes!

The lady at the stall cut the potatoes in half. It’s hard to see from this picture, but it was steaming.

There are different kinds of toppings for the potatoes. The lady in the pictue helped sprinkle them for my children. I think it was salt and pepper.

Big potatoes!

The person who cooked the potatoes for us is a 3 generation farmer. He told me that the Red Land has been a popular destination for tourist over the past few decades. There were many tourist buses that brought tourists, but the number has been decreasing.

The person who sold the potatoes usually works in a company in the nearest city, but when there is long weekend, he comes home and help sell the potatoes that his parents grew.

My daughters still talk about how delicious the warm potatoes and corn were. I really like talking with local people during the trip. It makes our time richer and richer. 飛び出すハートラブラブ

We got this canned tea from our tour driver. It tasted like sweet tea. I couldn’t finish it. 笑い泣きクラッカー

For my next blog post, I will talk about our visit to the world heritage site, 西山龍門(Xishan Longmen), which means Dragon Gate on the West Mountain, in Yunnan province. The dragon gate is known as the origin of “登竜門(Gate of success)”. It is believed that if you touch the Dragon Gate, your dreams will come true, such as passing exams, getting a promotion, and other such successes.

Thank you so much for reading my blog!
